THE ART OF SHOOT STYLING

A photo’s set up is a key aspect to the story you aim to tell. It forms part of the canvas you create on; it complements the subject and emphasises the concept that inspired your photoshoot. Whether you are hoping to learn how to create beautiful visuals for your own personal photographs, or perhaps you’re a brand owner responsible for styling your own photoshoots – here are a few things to keep in mind.

Brainstorm the concept and aesthetic by playing around with forms of inspiration that you might like. For us, those include photographs by other creators, visuals of random elements that we might be drawn to, or words that inspire our thought process. Moodboards can merge many forms of inspiration, often in a nonsensical way. Eventually, you’ll be able to clearly visualise the concept and communicate it with those involved.

Visuals can be sourced via Pinterest, printed out and pinned onto a wooden board in your creative space, or you can easily combine them on a Canva board.

If you require models to help display your product, allocate a good chunk of your time to choosing models that fit the look and feel of your shoot. Consider their physical appearance, personality, and any specific attributes that will complement your brand.

Select your wardrobe and accessories according to the moodboard and models chosen. Clothes are a fundamental piece in the story your photographs will tell. Start by selecting your colours wisely; people associate colours with specific emotions, seasons and messages, so it is pivotal that you understand colour study on a basic level. The colours should flatter your models’ complexion and complement your product. We love neutrals that help products stand out and create the elegant visual theme you see in our work, but it does vary by project! Keep in mind that while some fabrics and textures look beautiful in person, they may not photograph as well. It’s always wise to test complex pieces and have backups available!

Carefully consider the location and setting. The location and setting of the photoshoot will add a lot of visual interest and help set the tone for the images. Research, walk around and look out for spots that work for your concept. If you’re opting for an indoor shoot, remember to select your backdrop wisely. We love the process of picking out fabrics or paper for a shoot, as it will make or break the entire thing!

Continue by sourcing props that fit your moodboard. I personally have built a collection of spontaneously sourced items from artisanal businesses and flea markets, including vintage books, brass wax stamps and music sheets. I sometimes combine these with pieces of jewellery I own, or natural elements such as dried up flowers or seaside finds. These small and quite random items tend to give photographs their character. If you’re in need of a last minute addition, scour your home for items that might work, head to a nearby park or look out for accessories your models might be wearing. Never underestimate your surroundings!

Don’t be afraid to play around with your set-up. We believe that the best set-ups are partially spontaneous and a bit chaotic. Scatter items and create an artful mess, the experimentation often inspires the end result.

We hope this inspires you to create your dream set-up! Drop us a message if you’re looking for styling assistance on your next shoot.
